Monuments de Chagrin

Over the years, numerous photographers were fascinated by the bunkers of the Atlantikwall. The big inspiration, I think, for all these photographers was the French cultural theorist, urbanist, and aesthetic philosopher Paul Virilio. His 1975 book Bunker Archéologie is a classic, and also the first to examine the concrete World War 2 structures in detail. […]

Regelbau, the photo series

Until the end of March and during July, August and September I’m presenting my photo series ‘Regelbau’ in Kunstfort Vijfhuizen, the Netherlands. It’s a study on the German standardized bunker from World War Two and its current state both as an historical object and a part of present nature. A fascination for modernist materials such […]

Regelbau 638 opened after 60 years

The most complete army battery of the Südwall at La Tamarissière (Agde) has the only built 638 hospital bunker on this side of the front. The bunker was closed since the 1950s but has been reopened this weekend by a local group of enthusiasts. Pipettes, syringe boxes, various tubes and even remains of unused glass x-ray […]

Denmark demolitions

122 bunkers along the Danish coast will be demolished in the coming months. This is because the concrete and steel remains pose a danger to the public. According to TH on Axis History Forum the following bunkers will be demolished: 1x L 410, 1x L 411, 1x 621, 1x 676, 5x 680, at least 62 […]

Landfront Vlissingen and bunkers in IJmuiden now protected by law

Great news for several bunker complexes in the Netherlands. Both the Landfront of the Verteidigungsbereich Vlissingen (except for the anti-tank wall in the east) and the batteries of Olmen and Heerenduin in the dunes of IJmuiden are classified as national heritage. It took over 10 years to come to this conclusion, but the persistance paid off. […]

Alarming messages from Denmark

Ok, the story appeared on an engineers website but still it’s an alarming message. Without mentioning any historical value of the bunkers, Poul Erik Faurholm of CMP Demolition A/S makes a cold calculation on how the bunkers could be demolished. The only question is: “Who’s going to pay for this all”. I hope Danish government officials have […]

Epic Books: Duitse bunkers in Nederland, 1979

In the series Epic Books I discuss the books that either were the first in the field or the ones that inspired and mystified me. It was the time when the internet wasn’t there yet to look it all up, and when I still thought German bunkers were Dutch. This time it’s ‘Duitse bunkers in […]
